Zakir Hussain’s “Masters of Percussion” arrives at the Wheeler Opera House for an evening of breathtaking rhythm and global music fusion. Led by Zakir Hussain, the world’s preeminent tabla virtuoso, this performance features an ensemble of internationally acclaimed percussionists. Melissa Hié brings her melodic mastery of the djembe, blending traditional African rhythms with contemporary sounds. Anantha Krishnan, a mridangam maestro, bridges tradition and modernity with impeccable skill. Sriram Ramesh, a Khanjira specialist, captivates with his innovative approach to South Indian rhythms. Shikhar Naad Qureshi, carrying forward his family’s legendary legacy, delivers a groundbreaking performance on the djembe and drum set.

Widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement, Zakir’s contribution has been unique, with many historic collaborations, including “Shakti”, which he founded with John McLaughlin and L. Shankar, “Remember Shakti”, the “Diga Rhythm Band”, “Making Music”, “Planet Drum” with Mickey Hart, “Tabla Beat Science”, “Sangam” with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland, and recordings and performances with artists as diverse as George Harrison, YoYo Ma, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Airto Moreira, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, Mark Morris, Alonzo King, and the Kodo drummers.
