SUMMARY:Proactive & Prepared: Wildfire in the Roaring Fork Valley
DESCRIPTION:Wheeler Opera House is pleased to partner with the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley\, Aspen Public Radio and ACES on an event designed to increase awareness and preparedness as wildfire season approaches. Colorado is experiencing its warmest year in 131 years of record\, and one of its driest. The Roaring Fork Valley sits at the epicenter\, among the hardest-hit areas in the state for severe drought. With snowpack now peaked at historic lows\, climate scientists are drawing comparisons to years that defined what catastrophic wildfire looks like in Colorado. This spring\, wildfire risk across our valley is as serious as it has ever been.On Thursday\, June 4\, the Wheeler is partnering with the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley\, Aspen Public Radio\, and ACES to bring our community together for a direct conversation about what these conditions mean for our valley\, what local fire departments and researchers are doing about it\, and what each of us can do to protect our homes and our neighbors. We’ll start the presentation at 6pm sharp\, with opportunities for attendees to connect to presenters and panelists in the lobby both before and after the event. If you’ve been wondering where things actually stand\, this is the event to attend.Utilizing Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley’s boots-on-the-ground expertise\, Aspen Public Radio’s journalistic prowess\, and ACES’ decades of environmental experience\, an informative evening will review this season’s wildfire outlook\, new predictive technologies and resilience increasing efforts in our region. The evening is organized around three questions: What are we facing this season? What is being done about it? What happens when fire comes? Drawing on the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley’s work in fire behavior modeling and fuels mitigation\, Aspen Public Radio’s deep ties to this community\, and ACES knowledge of historic environmental science\, the program brings together the people best positioned to answer those questions — climate scientists\, local fire chiefs\, researchers\, and emergency response leaders — in one room\, for one conversation. This event is generously underwritten by FireFocus\, providing expert residential mitigation services designed to keep homes and families safe in the Roaring Fork Valley. The staged event will start promptly at 6:00pm.

SUMMARY:ACES and The Nature Conservancy Presents Witness to Water: A photographer’s lifelong journey
DESCRIPTION:Witness to Water follows the Colorado River from its pristine headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to its altered and endangered end in the Sonoran Desert. In this immersive multimedia presentation and book launch celebration\, acclaimed National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride shares images\, videos\, and sound from decades spent documenting the river from source to sea—or dry delta—and its many tributaries\, from the Roaring Fork to the Gila and beyond.Through travel by packraft\, on foot\, and from the air\, McBride bears witness to both the river’s extraordinary beauty and the immense pressures placed upon it. The program features brand-new work from recent visits to emerging conservation pockets in the Colorado River Delta and newly revealed slot canyons in Lake Powell\, landscapes hidden underwater for a lifetime\, alongside Indigenous and local perspectives that deepen the story.A Roaring Fork Valley native\, McBride brings a deeply personal lens to this presentation\, weaving together his films\, assignments\, and books into a comprehensive\, engaging\, and hopeful portrait. Both an elegy and a call to action\, Witness to Water is an unforgettable exploration of a river in peril—and a reminder of what is at stake for the wild watersheds that sustain us all. A Q&A and book signing will take place at the end of the event. Explorer book sellers will be in the Vault selling the Pete McBride’s book Witness to Water.

SUMMARY:Aspen Historical Society Presents: Chris Anthony’s Aspen Premiere of "Friedl"
DESCRIPTION:Aspen Historical Society welcomes professional skier and documentary filmmaker Chris Anthony back to the Wheeler Opera House for the Aspen premiere of Friedl\, Anthony’s latest film exploring the legendary life of one of Aspen’s most influential ski pioneers\, Friedl Pfeifer. While researching a sequel to his award-winning documentary\, Mission Mt. Mangart\, Chris uncovered the remarkable story of a daring ski race on Austria’s highest peak\, the Grossglockner\, which required athletes to climb to the summit starting in the middle of the night. Austrians held the race beginning in 1935\, initially on wooden skis with leather boots and bindings\, descending the glacier below to avoid crevasses\, rocks\, and cliffs rather than using gates. In 1935\, the fastest skier from the summit was Friedl Pfefier\, who also won a shorter version of the race in 1936. Chris quickly realized this was the same Friedl Pfeifer whose statue stands at the base of Ajax: Pfeifer escaped the Nazi regime\, immigrated to the United States\, led the Sun Valley Ski School\, served in the 10th Mountain Division\, and later helped create Aspen Skiing Corporation. The film explores this sweeping story\, followed by a conversation with Colorado Snow Sports Hall of Fame inductee Chris Anthony. Photo: Friedl Pfeifer circa 1950. SUMMARY:Area 23a/Gabe Polsky Productions Presents: The Man Who Saves the World?
DESCRIPTION:Join spiritual journeyman Patrick McCollum\, Director Gabe Polsky\, and special guests for a mind-blowing cinematic experience. This isn’t just a film screening—it’s a live experience featuring magical storytelling\, and conversation with the documentary’s subject: kung fu master\, U.N. peacekeeper\, Wiccan chaplain\, and the man prophesied to save the Amazon. When director Gabe Polsky gets swept into Patrick McCollum’s orbit\, it sparks a globe-spanning adventure where the absurd and the profound collide. Along the way\, they cross paths with legends like Jane Goodall and Chief Phil Lane Jr.\, uncovering a mission that might just be crazy enough to save the planet. The Man Who Saves the World? is a bold documentary that blends spiritual prophecy\, environmental urgency\, and absurdist character study into something entirely unique. Equal parts Herzogian adventure and modern myth\, it explores big questions with humor\, humanity\, and surreal twists. Behind the film is the Executive Producer team of Oscar-winning directorproducer Peter Farrelly\, Rough House Pictures (Danny McBride/David Gordon GreenJody Hill)\, and Area 23a (Fantastic Fungi\, Common Ground). “Patrick is probably the most extraordinary person I’ve met.” -Jane Goodall “One of my favorite documentaries in years — leave it to Gabe Polsky to track down one of the most colorful characters and craziest stories ever captured on film.”” – Scott Feinberg\, The Hollywood Reporter “I love this movie and I wish everybody could see it because it’s life-affirming and timely.” -Peter Farrelly “4 out of 4 Stars” -RogerEbert.com 100% Approval -Rotten Tomatoes

SUMMARY:Wheeler Associates Presents: Sam Grisman Project
DESCRIPTION:Sam Grisman is a bass player\, music appreciator\, and bandleader who grew up in Mill Valley\, California in a home where some of the great acoustic music of our time was being recorded on a regular basis. His father\, legendary mandolinist\, composer\, and producer\, David Grisman\, was constantly having friends come over to his home studio for recording sessions and rehearsals. These friends\, such as Doc Watson\, Jerry Garcia\, John Hartford\, Mike Seeger\, and Tony Rice all left an impression on the younger Grisman and inspired him to pursue a life making music with his many talented friends. Sam Grisman Project was created to shed light on the music that Sam grew up around\, and highlight that music’s influence on the members of the collective and in the greater music community. The band’s shows create a safe space where the band and audience can bask in the shared love and reverence for the great music and musicians who continue to inspire us all. The friends who make up Sam Grisman Project are a rotating cadre of acousticians who are some of the brightest individual voices on their respective instruments. Members of this rotating cast of instrumental wizards include guitarists Max Flansburg\, Logan Ledger\, Sam Leslie\, Henry Moser\, Jesse Harper\, and Jefferson Hamer\, mandolinists Dominick Leslie\, Joe K. Walsh\, Matt Flinner\, and Jesse Appelman\, clawhammer banjo maestro Victor Furtado\, fiddlers John Mailander\, Alex Hargreaves\, Nate Leath\, Shad Cobb\, and Phoebe Hunt\, cellist Nat Smith\, and Todd Livingston on the Dobro. The band also frequently collaborates with legendary singer\, songwriter\, and bluegrass pioneer Peter Rowan\, a deeply meaningful connection for Sam and the band tying directly back to his father David Grisman and the Old and In the Way legacy. Over the years Sam Grisman Project has been joined by a wide range of spontaneous and exciting guests including David Grisman\, John Sebastian\, Tim O’Brien\, Billy Strings\, Maria Muldaur\, Margo Price\, and many more. This ever evolving collective of exceptional humans who happen to be incredible musicians is a testament to the abundance of joy\, and wealth of experiences that growing up around this timeless music has brought into the younger Grisman’s life. Sam Grisman Project is committed to putting their love\, gratitude\, and individuality into the music that they share on stage each night\, and to participating in the community effort of preserving\, expanding\, and appreciating great American acoustic music. To preserve the sonic integrity of their instruments and voices\, SGP plays acoustic music into condenser microphones. The sound on stage is fully acoustic and sensitive\, so we kindly ask that you save conversations for before and after the show or during the set break. Thanks for coming and thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy the music. “They don’t just play this music. They live it. And they make you feel like you’re part of it too.” — No Depression “This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a living breathing celebration led by musicians who understand the soul of the music.” — Bluegrass Today “One of the most joyful and reverent tributes to the Grateful Dawg legacy you’ll ever witness.” — Relix Magazine Co-presented by Wheeler Associates & Wheeler Opera House
